Small study tests if exercise eases heart flutter symptoms
NCT ID NCT05085860
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study looked at whether it's possible to run a larger trial comparing two types of exercise—moderate steady exercise and high-intensity interval training—on symptoms of atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm problem. Researchers enrolled 25 men and women with AF who were not already regular exercisers. Participants tried each exercise type for a week and a no-exercise week, tracking their symptoms. The main goal was to see if people would join and stick with the study, not to prove exercise works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
exercise (moderate-intensity continuous training and high-intensity interval training)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could pave the way for larger studies to understand how exercise impacts AF symptoms, potentially guiding personalized activity recommendations.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (25 people) focused on feasibility, not on proving exercise helps AF. Results may not apply to all AF patients, and exercise could temporarily worsen symptoms in some individuals.
