Stomach-shrinking procedure may help control blood sugar and delay insulin in type 2 diabetes

NCT ID NCT07639684

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether a weight-loss procedure called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) can improve blood sugar control and reduce the need for insulin in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Participants have poorly controlled diabetes despite taking standard medications, including GLP-1 drugs. The study will measure changes in blood sugar levels and track serious side effects over one year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) with OverStitch Endoscopic Suturing System

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to improve blood sugar control and reduce or delay the need for insulin in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. The procedure carries risks of serious side effects, and weight loss may not be enough to meaningfully change diabetes outcomes.
