Short-Term stronger blood thinner may cut heart risks in AF patients
NCT ID NCT04981041
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether giving a more powerful antiplatelet drug (prasugrel or ticagrelor) for one month after a heart attack, along with a standard blood thinner, could reduce heart attacks, strokes, and deaths in people with atrial fibrillation. The 602 participants were then switched to a milder drug. The goal was to find a balance between preventing clots and avoiding dangerous bleeding.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Prasugrel or Ticagrelor (potent antiplatelet drugs)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safer way to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people with atrial fibrillation after a heart attack, using a short course of stronger medication.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 4 trial with 602 participants, so results are available but may not apply to everyone. The stronger drugs can increase bleeding risk, and the benefit may be small.
