Heart failure patients get a nutritional boost before surgery

NCT ID NCT05655910

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study looks at whether giving a special nutritional shake (Ensure Surgery) to heart failure patients before they get a heart pump (LVAD) can improve their gut health, reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of infections and other complications. About 50 hospitalized adults will take the shake for several days before surgery, and researchers will track changes in their gut bacteria, blood markers, and recovery. The goal is to find a simple way to improve outcomes for these very sick patients.
