ECMO Patients' hidden infection risk under the microscope
NCT ID NCT05566665
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study follows 200 adults on ECMO (a heart-lung machine) for severe breathing problems. Researchers track how many get hospital-acquired infections and measure antibiotic levels in their blood and lungs. The goal is to learn more about infections and drug dosing in these critically ill patients, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors choose the right antibiotic doses for ECMO patients, potentially reducing infection-related deaths.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only collects data, so it cannot directly improve patient outcomes. Results may not apply to all hospitals.
