New blood filter could save lives in sudden liver failure

NCT ID NCT07178366

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a blood purification device called DPMAS for people with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), a life-threatening condition. About 56 adults will be randomly assigned to standard medical care alone or standard care plus DPMAS. The goal is to see if DPMAS improves liver function and survival without needing a transplant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Double Plasma Molecular Adsorption System (DPMAS) - a blood purification device

What this could lead to

If it works, DPMAS could offer a way to stabilize liver function and improve survival without needing a transplant for people with acute-on-chronic liver failure.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 56 participants. The treatment is not a cure and may not work for everyone. There are also risks from the blood filtering procedure itself.
