Cutting junk food may ease heart failure burden

NCT ID NCT07649148

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether people with heart failure can reduce their intake of ultra-processed foods (like packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and fast food) and whether doing so improves their health. Participants will track their meals using a smartphone app and receive coaching on how to eat fewer processed foods. Researchers will also test blood and urine samples to find biological markers that show how much ultra-processed food a person has eaten. The goal is to see if this approach is practical and leads to better heart health.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dietary counseling to limit ultra-processed foods

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that reducing ultra-processed foods is a practical way to improve heart failure symptoms and guide future dietary recommendations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all heart failure patients. Dietary changes can be hard to maintain, and the app-based tracking may not be accurate for everyone.
