First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a special diabetes prevention program for college students at high risk for type 2 diabetes, especially those facing challenges like food or financial insecurity. 80 UCLA undergraduates with prediabetes or high risk were randomly assigned to either the program or a control group. The program included 19 group sessions with a lifestyle coach, focusing on healthy habits and weight loss. Researchers measured weight change and quality of life after 9 months to see if the program was effective and well-liked.

What this could lead to
If successful, this program could help prevent type 2 diabetes in high-risk young adults, especially those facing food or financial insecurity.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed pilot study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to larger or more diverse groups. Weight loss and quality-of-life improvements were measured, but long-term diabetes prevention was not directly assessed.
