Can two cheap drugs get your gut moving again after surgery?

NCT ID NCT07329933

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will test whether giving dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine, or both right after gallbladder surgery helps the gut start working again sooner. 160 adults having laparoscopic gallbladder removal will be randomly assigned to one of four groups, including a placebo. The main measure is a daily score of how well the gut is functioning, looking at eating, nausea, vomiting, and bowel movements.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give doctors a simple, low-cost way to help people recover normal bowel function faster after gallbladder surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial that hasn't started yet. The drugs may not improve gut recovery any better than a placebo, and side effects are possible.
