Blood test may spare thousands from unnecessary colonoscopies after diverticulitis
NCT ID NCT06023004
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether a blood test that detects tumor DNA can help decide which people with diverticulitis need a colonoscopy to check for colorectal cancer. Currently, almost everyone with diverticulitis is advised to get a colonoscopy, but many are unnecessary. The researchers will compare the blood test results with colonoscopy findings in 220 participants to see if the blood test is accurate enough to guide decisions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
blood test for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)
What this could lead to
If successful, this blood test could help doctors decide who really needs a colonoscopy after diverticulitis, reducing unnecessary procedures and costs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 220 participants. The blood test may not be accurate enough to replace colonoscopy, and results may not apply to all patients.
