Neck scan could predict heart attacks in arthritis patients
NCT ID NCT07611747
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether using a carotid ultrasound (a neck scan) to find hidden plaque in arteries can help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. About 1,944 participants aged 50 and older will be split into two groups: one gets the ultrasound and, if plaque is found, receives high-dose statins; the other gets standard care. The goal is to see if this approach lowers major heart events over 4 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- High-intensity statins (atorvastatin or rosuvastatin)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a better way to identify and treat heart disease risk in people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases, potentially preventing heart attacks and strokes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial, but it is still ongoing and results are not yet known. The strategy may not reduce heart events as hoped, and statins can cause side effects like muscle pain or liver issues.
