Exercise after breast cancer: a new prescription for survival?
NCT ID NCT05957068
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a 24-week exercise program combining brisk walking and strength training can improve survival in women with early-stage breast cancer. Over 2,000 participants will be enrolled within 8 weeks of finishing surgery or chemotherapy. The program starts with in-person sessions and continues with remote or gym-based training. Researchers will track cancer recurrence and overall survival.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Exercise programme (aerobic exercise and strength training)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that regular exercise after breast cancer treatment helps reduce the risk of cancer returning and improves overall survival.
- What could go wrong
- This is a behavioral intervention, not a drug, so results may vary widely. The study is large but still observational in nature regarding survival outcomes, and exercise adherence may be challenging for some participants.
