Could Pre-Surgery radiation make inoperable breast tumors removable?

NCT ID NCT05479409

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether giving radiation therapy before surgery can shrink advanced breast tumors that didn't respond well to chemotherapy, making them operable. Researchers are also testing if a dietary supplement called beta-alanine and a special type of radiation (lattice radiotherapy) can boost the treatment's effect. The trial involves 70 participants with locally advanced breast cancer and aims to find better ways to control the disease and predict who will respond best.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

radiation therapy, beta-alanine dietary supplement, and spatially fractionated radiotherapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help shrink inoperable breast tumors enough for surgery and improve long-term control of the disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 70 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Radiation side effects are possible, and the added benefit of beta-alanine or lattice radiotherapy is unproven.
