Brain surgery patients play theremin to unlock secrets of learning
NCT ID NCT05688683
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how the brain learns to control sound by having patients play a theremin-like instrument during awake brain surgery. Researchers will record brain activity directly from the surface of the brain to understand sensorimotor learning. The study involves 50 people with epilepsy or brain tumors who are already scheduled for surgery. This is not a treatment but aims to gather knowledge about brain function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve our understanding of how the brain learns fine motor skills, potentially aiding rehabilitation after brain injury.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study focused on brain activity recording, not a treatment. Results may not directly translate to therapies.
