Balloon in the aorta: a new hope for cardiac arrest?
NCT ID NCT06071910
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a balloon device, called REBOA, can be safely used by emergency teams outside a hospital to improve blood flow in people whose heart has stopped (cardiac arrest). The balloon is inserted into the main artery and inflated to redirect blood to the heart and brain. Researchers will check if the procedure is possible and if it helps blood pressure during CPR. The study involves 40 adults in the East of England.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ER-REBOA catheter (a balloon device inserted into the aorta to block blood flow)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using a balloon to redirect blood flow during cardiac arrest is possible and may improve chances of survival.
What could go wrong
This is a very early feasibility study with only 40 participants. The procedure is experimental and may not work or could cause complications like vessel damage.
