Engineered immune cells take on childhood cancers in early trial
NCT ID NCT06500819
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing a new type of immunotherapy called B7-H3 CAR T cells in children and young adults whose solid tumors (such as neuroblastoma, sarcoma, or osteosarcoma) have come back or not responded to standard treatments. The therapy involves taking a patient's own immune cells, engineering them in a lab to better recognize and attack cancer cells, and then infusing them back into the patient. The main goals are to see if the cells can be manufactured reliably and to find a safe dose, while also watching for any tumor shrinkage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
B7-H3 chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a new treatment option for children and young adults with hard-to-treat solid tumors like neuroblastoma and sarcoma.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 1 trial with only 41 participants, so it is primarily testing safety and dosing. The treatment may not shrink tumors, and there are risks of side effects like cytokine release syndrome.
