Which exercise eases knee pain best? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07302204

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two exercise programs for people with knee osteoarthritis: supervised cycling on a stationary bike and a land-based therapeutic exercise program with strengthening and balance training. The goal is to see which approach better reduces pain sensitivity during and after exercise. Ninety adults aged 45 to 75 with knee osteoarthritis will participate over ten weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
exercise (aerobic cycling or therapeutic exercises)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show that a specific type of exercise is better at reducing pain sensitivity in people with knee osteoarthritis, helping guide more effective non-drug treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (90 participants) comparing two exercise types. The results may not apply to all patients, and the primary outcome is a lab measure of pain threshold, not necessarily long-term pain relief.
