Could a Two-Drug cocktail replace triple therapy for heart stent patients?

NCT ID NCT04695106

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a two-drug combination of dabigatran and ticagrelor can lower bleeding risk compared to the standard three-drug therapy (dabigatran, clopidogrel, and aspirin) in people with atrial fibrillation who have had a heart stent after a heart attack. About 1,200 participants will receive either the dual or triple therapy for 12 months. The goal is to see if the dual therapy is at least as safe and effective at preventing clots and strokes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dabigatran and ticagrelor (blood thinners)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a safer, simpler two-drug regimen that lowers bleeding risk while still protecting against clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation and recent heart stents.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 4 non-inferiority trial, meaning it aims to show the new combo is at least as safe as current care, not necessarily better. Results may not apply to all patients, and bleeding risks remain.
