First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tests whether a sedative called dexmedetomidine can prevent long-term memory and thinking problems that often occur after heart surgery. Researchers will enroll 2,400 adults aged 60 and older who are having bypass or valve surgery. Participants will receive either dexmedetomidine or a placebo during surgery, and their cognitive function will be tracked for up to a year.
