New combo therapy aims to fight recurrent brain tumors

NCT ID NCT02800486

First seen May 02, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests a combination of a targeted cancer drug (cetuximab) given directly into the brain's blood vessels along with repeat radiation for people whose brain cancer has come back. The study includes 37 adults with specific types of aggressive brain tumors that overproduce a protein called EGFR. The goal is to see if this approach can safely slow tumor growth and improve survival.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cetuximab (Erbitux) and radiation therapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for patients with recurrent brain cancer, potentially slowing tumor growth and extending survival.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (37 people) with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. The treatment involves radiation and a targeted drug, which can cause side effects like brain swelling or toxicity.
