New synthetic skin patch tested for Hard-to-Heal wounds
NCT ID NCT04927702
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a man-made skin substitute called Restrata for treating diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers. For diabetic foot ulcers, Restrata was compared to standard wound care. For venous leg ulcers, it was compared to a living cell-based skin substitute (Apligraf). The goal was to see if Restrata could help wounds close completely. The trial was terminated early and involved 48 participants.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Synthetic Hybrid-Scale Fiber Matrix (Restrata)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new, off-the-shelf option for closing chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers, potentially reducing healing time.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early with only 48 participants, so results are limited. Synthetic skin substitutes may not work as well as living cell-based treatments for all patients.
