A breath of relief? essential oils tested for wound care anxiety

NCT ID NCT07732036

First seen Jul 28, 2026 · Last updated Jul 29, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot trial tests whether inhaling a blend of Asian essential oils (Basil, Elemi, Calamansi) can reduce anxiety and pain in people with venous leg ulcers undergoing a wound-cleaning procedure called conservative sharp wound debridement. About 40 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the aromatherapy or a placebo during their procedure. The study aims to see if this simple, drug-free approach is feasible, acceptable, and potentially effective for easing distress during wound care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to ease anxiety and pain during wound care procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply widely. The effect may be no better than placebo, and some people may be sensitive to the oils.
