Can a tailored diet and exercise plan prevent diabetes in people with disabilities?

NCT ID NCT06976307

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 09, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study is testing different combinations of diet and exercise to find the best weight loss plan for people with prediabetes who also have physical or mobility disabilities. Thirty participants will start with either a high or reduced carbohydrate diet. After four weeks, those who lose enough weight continue their plan, while others are randomly assigned to add time-restricted eating or extra exercise coaching. The goal is to see which sequence works best for weight loss and blood sugar control.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
diet and exercise programs (high or reduced carbohydrate diet, time-restricted eating, additional exercise counseling)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a personalized weight loss strategy that helps prevent type 2 diabetes in people with disabilities.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study is not testing a new drug, and weight loss strategies often fail to produce lasting results.
