Virtual worlds may dull the sting of burn care for children
NCT ID NCT07740980
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether virtual reality (VR) can reduce pain, fear, and distress in children aged 6 to 12 during burn dressing changes. Half of the participants will receive standard care plus VR distraction, while the other half receives standard care alone. Pain, fear, and distress will be measured during the procedure. The goal is to see if immersive VR can make this painful experience more bearable for young patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Virtual reality (VR) distraction using a standalone VR headset with immersive, interactive content
- What this could lead to
- If effective, VR could become a standard, drug-free way to ease pain and fear for children during painful burn care, improving their experience and reducing anxiety about future treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial, and results may not apply to all children or settings. VR might not work for everyone, and some children may find the headset uncomfortable or overwhelming.
