Brain vein stent could ease pressure and save sight in IIH patients
NCT ID NCT06919744
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether placing a small stent in a narrowed brain vein can reduce high pressure inside the skull and improve symptoms like vision loss, headache, and tinnitus. About 114 adults with newly diagnosed idiopathic intracranial hypertension will be randomly assigned to either standard care (medication and weight loss) or standard care plus the stenting procedure. Researchers will check if the stent helps resolve swelling of the optic nerve and normalize pressure within three months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
venous sinus stenting (a device procedure) plus acetazolamide and weight loss
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option to reduce brain pressure and prevent vision loss in people with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-phase study (114 people) and stenting is an invasive procedure with risks like bleeding or infection. It may not prove better than standard care alone.
