Brain vein stent could ease pressure for IIH patients

NCT ID NCT06945848

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is for people with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) who have been on the drug acetazolamide for over a year without enough relief. It tests whether placing a small stent in a narrowed brain vein can lower the pressure and improve symptoms like headache and vision problems. Half the participants will get the stent plus standard care, while the other half will continue with standard care alone. The trial will follow them for a year to see if the stent helps normalize pressure and allows them to stop medication.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Acetazolamide and a stent placed in a brain vein

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with IIH who don't get enough relief from medication, potentially reducing the need for long-term drugs.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply to everyone. Stenting is a procedure with risks like infection or blood clots, and it's not yet proven to be better than standard care.
