New hope for veteran smokers: drug may help cut down without quitting first

Summary

This study tests whether the drug varenicline can help 400 veterans who smoke at least 5 cigarettes a day but aren't ready to quit. Participants will take the medication and get support to reduce smoking, with the goal of eventually quitting. The study measures if they can stop smoking for 7 days at 6 and 12 months, confirmed by saliva tests.
