Heart mapping study could personalize AFib ablation and reduce repeat procedures
NCT ID NCT07047235
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study at St Bartholomew's Hospital is enrolling 160 people with persistent atrial fibrillation (AFib) who are scheduled for their first catheter ablation. Researchers will create detailed 3D electrical maps of the heart during the procedure to understand why AFib persists and why ablation fails for some. If AFib returns, participants may receive a second, tailored ablation based on their heart's specific abnormal areas. The goal is to develop a model that predicts who will benefit from standard ablation alone and who needs additional targeted treatment, ultimately improving success rates and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
catheter ablation (pulmonary vein reisolation, ganglionic plexi ablation, substrate ablation)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to more personalized and effective ablation procedures for persistent atrial fibrillation, reducing the need for repeat procedures and improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study (Phase NA) with 160 participants. It aims to gather data and develop models, not to test a new treatment directly. The findings may not apply to all patients with atrial fibrillation.
