Can a common drug make abortion safer? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06820177
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving tranexamic acid (TXA) before a second-trimester dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure can reduce heavy bleeding. Heavy bleeding is a rare but serious risk of D&E. The trial will include 276 pregnant people aged 18 and older who are between 18 and 24 weeks pregnant and are having an abortion or managing a fetal demise. Half will receive TXA, and half will receive a placebo, and researchers will compare bleeding outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- tranexamic acid
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to reduce bleeding complications during second-trimester abortion procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial, but it is still recruiting and results are not yet known. The drug may not significantly reduce bleeding or the need for extra interventions.
