Navigators may bridge kidney transplant gap for minorities and women
NCT ID NCT00805038
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether trained transplant navigators could help kidney failure patients complete the steps needed to get a kidney transplant. About 167 adults on dialysis were assigned to either a navigator or usual care. The navigator provided tailored help and information to patients and their doctors. The main goal was to see if patients completed more steps toward transplantation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
transplant navigator (behavioral intervention)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce disparities in kidney transplant access and improve survival and quality of life for patients with kidney failure.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage behavioral study. Results may not apply to all populations or settings, and the intervention may not lead to actual transplant rate increases.
