Heart rhythm watch: do ICU patients face hidden AF risk after leaving hospital?

NCT ID NCT05229211

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study follows 100 ICU patients who developed new atrial fibrillation (AF) during their stay. Using a chest-worn heart monitor, researchers track whether AF returns after leaving the ICU and up to 3 months after hospital discharge. The goal is to understand who might need long-term monitoring or treatment to prevent strokes and heart failure.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could show which ICU patients need follow-up care to prevent strokes or heart failure from returning atrial fibrillation.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study (100 people) that only monitors, not treats. It may not prove that monitoring reduces risks or applies to all ICU patients.
