Breathing tube risks under the microscope: new study aims to predict throat injuries

NCT ID NCT07264179

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will follow 362 adults having planned surgery with a breathing tube to see what factors lead to throat pain, hoarseness, cough, or coughing up blood. Researchers will track tube pressure and other details to create a risk score. The goal is to better understand and possibly prevent these common post-surgery problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors predict and prevent throat injuries from breathing tubes during surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly improve patient care. Results may not apply to all surgery types.
