Brain zaps may rewire Smokers' reward centers
NCT ID NCT05766254
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a non-invasive brain stimulation technique called TMS can change how the brain processes rewards in smokers. Researchers will compare different targeting methods to see which best boosts brain signals related to reward and decision-making. The goal is to find the optimal spot to stimulate, which could eventually help reduce cravings and support quitting. Thirty-six nicotine-dependent adults will participate in three sessions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify the best brain target for TMS to reduce cravings and improve decision-making in smokers, pointing toward better addiction treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 36 participants, focused on brain activity measures rather than quitting smoking. Results may not lead to a practical treatment.
