First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will look at tissue and bacteria samples from 20 people having surgery for severe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems like ankylosis or osteoarthritis. Researchers want to find out what causes these severe conditions and whether bacteria in the joint affect recovery. Participants will complete pain and function questionnaires and be followed for up to two years after surgery.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors better understand why some people develop severe TMJ problems and how to improve surgical outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 20 participants. It is not testing a new treatment, so it may not lead to direct changes in care.
