Can exercise save your muscles while on Weight-Loss drugs? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07609160

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will test whether a 24-week home-based resistance exercise program, when added to the weight-loss drug tirzepatide, helps overweight and obese adults maintain muscle mass and strength. About 108 people starting tirzepatide will be randomly assigned to either exercise plus the drug or the drug alone. Researchers will measure changes in thigh muscle thickness and quality using ultrasound.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tirzepatide

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that combining exercise with tirzepatide helps overweight people lose weight while keeping muscle strength and quality.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (108 people) that hasn't started yet. The exercise is home-based, so results may vary, and tirzepatide can cause side effects like nausea or digestive issues.
