Can a talking therapy keep HIV patients in care?
NCT ID NCT04481373
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a program called THRIVE for hospitalized people with HIV who were not regularly seeing a doctor. The program uses acceptance and commitment therapy to help patients overcome avoidance and stigma. Researchers enrolled 75 participants to see if the program was acceptable and could improve viral load and retention in care. The results will help decide if larger studies are worthwhile.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy plus Education (behavioral intervention)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help people with HIV stay in care and achieve better viral control, potentially reducing the spread of HIV.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 75 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is behavioral and may not work for all individuals.
