Could low testosterone raise heart risk after spinal cord injury?
NCT ID NCT07227740
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at why men with spinal cord injury often have low testosterone and how that might damage blood vessels, raising the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Researchers will test blood vessel function in 48 men with recent spinal cord injury and low testosterone. They hope to uncover the link between testosterone deficiency and blood vessel health, which could lead to new ways to prevent heart disease in this group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
vasoactive agents (acetylcholine, isoproterenol, sodium nitroprusside) infused into the arm artery
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward testosterone-based treatments to lower heart attack and stroke risk in men with spinal cord injury.
What could go wrong
This is an early, small observational study (48 participants) that measures biological markers, not clinical outcomes. It may not lead to a proven treatment.
