Earpiece zaps nerves to shrink Radiation-Damaged brain swelling

NCT ID NCT07680127

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether a gentle electrical earpiece, worn twice daily for two weeks, can reduce brain swelling caused by radiation necrosis. The device stimulates a nerve in the ear to calm inflammation. Forty people with brain tumors who need a laser procedure will be randomly assigned to receive real or sham stimulation, and researchers will measure changes in swelling and inflammatory markers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) device

What this could lead to

If effective, this non-invasive earpiece could offer a new way to reduce brain swelling after radiation therapy, potentially reducing the need for steroids or surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The treatment is short-term and may not produce lasting benefits.
