NCT ID NCT07173764

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

Syphilis affects about 1 in 25 pregnant women in Uganda and can harm both mother and baby if untreated. This study will test a new rapid test that gives results in 10 minutes, comparing it to standard lab tests that take hours or days. Researchers will enroll 24 mothers and their newborns at Kawempe National Referral Hospital to see if the quick test is accurate enough for routine use.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a fast, reliable way to diagnose syphilis in mothers and babies at the bedside, enabling quicker treatment and preventing serious health problems.
What could go wrong
This is a very small study (24 participants) that only checks if the rapid test matches lab results. It does not yet prove the test improves health outcomes or is practical in all settings.
