Can a weekly phone call prevent suicide? new trial aims to find out.
NCT ID NCT05837026
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a 12-week outreach program from a community crisis support group can reduce suicide attempts in people who recently visited an emergency department for suicidal thoughts. Participants will receive weekly phone or text check-ins, safety planning, and caring messages, plus standard care. The goal is to see if this extra support lowers suicide-related behaviors and improves attendance at follow-up mental health appointments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Enhanced Outreach Intervention (phone/text safety planning, caring contacts, risk assessment)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, scalable way to prevent suicide attempts in people leaving the emergency room.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (300 people) testing a behavioral intervention, not a drug. Results may not apply to everyone, and the effect may be modest.
