Could your own fat cells ease hip arthritis pain?
NCT ID NCT02844764
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether injecting a patient's own stem cells (from fat) and platelet-rich plasma into the hip joint can reduce pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis. The trial starts with 50 people and plans to expand to 4,000. Researchers will measure pain, quality of life, and look for cartilage regrowth on MRI.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
StroMed (a patient's own stem cells from fat) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to manage hip osteoarthritis pain and possibly regrow cartilage without surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 2 study with only 50 initial patients, so results are not yet proven. The treatment involves injections, which carry risks like infection or pain at the injection site.
