Algae gel could boost gum disease treatment
NCT ID NCT07647874
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a gel made from spirulina (a type of algae) can improve the treatment of stage II gum disease when used alongside standard deep cleaning. Researchers will compare different ways of preparing the spirulina gel and measure gum health and inflammation levels. The trial involves 75 adults with moderate gum disease and lasts three months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
spirulina gel
What this could lead to
If effective, spirulina gel could become a natural, low-cost addition to standard gum disease treatment, potentially reducing inflammation and improving healing.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small trial with only 75 participants. The gel is made from algae, and its effectiveness compared to standard care alone is uncertain. Results may not apply to more advanced gum disease.
