Can a single spinal injection transform Post-Surgery pain relief?
NCT ID NCT07777627
First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a single injection of morphine or dexmedetomidine into the spinal fluid, given at the end of spine fixation surgery, can provide better pain relief than a placebo. Adults aged 21 to 60 scheduled for elective lumbar spine surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the three groups. The study measures how long patients go before needing extra pain medication, along with heart rate and blood pressure changes over the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Intrathecal morphine or intrathecal dexmedetomidine, given as a single injection into the spinal fluid at the end of surgery
- What this could lead to
- If one of these spinal painkillers works better, it could point to a safer, more effective way to manage pain after spine surgery, reducing the need for strong rescue opioids.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and results may not apply to everyone. Both drugs carry risks like breathing problems, low blood pressure, or nausea, and the placebo comparison helps measure the true effect.
