Could a Two-Drug nerve block ease Post-Surgery pain?
NCT ID NCT07775053
First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether adding the painkiller tramadol to a standard local anesthetic nerve block improves pain control after a mastectomy. Women aged 20-70 scheduled for the surgery will receive either ropivacaine alone or ropivacaine plus tramadol in an ultrasound-guided chest nerve block. The study will compare how much pain they feel and how much additional opioid pain medication they need afterward.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- A nerve block using the local anesthetic ropivacaine, with or without the painkiller tramadol added.
- What this could lead to
- If adding tramadol to the nerve block works better, it could offer a more effective way to manage pain after breast cancer surgery and reduce the need for opioid painkillers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study, so results may not be definitive. Adding tramadol could also increase side effects like nausea or dizziness.
