Twin study seeks genetic clues to childhood brain cancer

NCT ID NCT06054295

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study is looking at 25 pairs of identical twins where only one twin has a childhood brain tumor. Researchers will collect blood and saliva samples to search for small genetic differences, called somatic mosaicism, that might explain why one twin got sick and the other stayed healthy. The goal is to better understand what causes these tumors, not to test a new treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help explain why some children develop brain tumors while their identical twin does not, pointing toward new ways to understand or predict cancer risk.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 50 participants, so findings may not apply to all children. It is designed to gather information, not to test a treatment, so there is no direct benefit to participants.
