New surgery may offer better reflux control for obese patients
NCT ID NCT07158008
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two surgical options for people with severe obesity and acid reflux (GERD). Half of the 560 participants will get a newer procedure called Nissen-Sleeve Gastrectomy, which combines stomach reduction with a reflux barrier; the other half will get the standard Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. The main goal is to see if the newer surgery controls reflux just as well one year after the operation, while also tracking weight loss and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nissen-Sleeve Gastrectomy (N-SG) and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgical procedures
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that Nissen-Sleeve Gastrectomy is as good as or better than the standard bypass for controlling acid reflux while offering simpler long-term care.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with one-year follow-up, so results may not apply broadly. Both surgeries carry risks like infection, nutritional issues, and complications.
