Gut and gums: does sleeve gastrectomy tame inflammation in the mouth?
NCT ID NCT07731412
First seen Jul 28, 2026 · Last updated Jul 29, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a weight-loss surgery, can reduce markers of inflammation in saliva and improve gum health in adults with both obesity and periodontitis (gum disease). Participants are randomly assigned to either surgery or non-surgical weight management, and their gum condition and inflammatory markers are tracked for six months. The goal is to see if treating obesity through surgery might also help control gum inflammation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
- What this could lead to
- If this pilot shows promise, it could pave the way for a larger trial testing whether weight-loss surgery improves gum health and reduces inflammation in people with obesity.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 32 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Surgery carries risks, and any benefits for gum health may be modest or temporary.
