Heart attack drug shows promise for Non-Diabetics
NCT ID NCT06903754
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed study tested whether SGLT2 inhibitors (dapagliflozin or empagliflozin), taken daily, can reduce heart failure hospitalizations, repeat heart attacks, and death in 450 non-diabetic patients who had a heart attack treated with stenting. Participants received the drug on top of standard care. The goal is to see if these medications, already used in diabetes, can also protect the heart in people without diabetes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SGLT2 inhibitors (dapagliflozin or empagliflozin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that SGLT2 inhibitors help prevent heart failure and reduce hospital readmissions in non-diabetic patients after a heart attack.
What could go wrong
The trial is completed but results are not yet widely confirmed. Benefits seen in diabetic patients may not fully apply to non-diabetics, and side effects like dehydration or kidney issues are possible.
