Diabetes drug semaglutide may boost blood vessel repair cells, small study hints
NCT ID NCT04126603
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed phase 4 trial tested whether semaglutide (a GLP-1 agonist drug) can improve the health of blood vessel repair cells and fat stem cells in people with type 2 diabetes. Ten participants received either semaglutide or a placebo for 24 weeks. Researchers measured changes in stem cell numbers, movement, and gene activity, as well as body composition and artery stiffness. The goal was to see if semaglutide could protect blood vessels and promote weight loss beyond its blood sugar effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that semaglutide helps protect blood vessels and improve fat cell function in people with type 2 diabetes, potentially reducing heart disease risk.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase trial (only 10 participants completed) looking at cell markers, not clinical outcomes. Results may not translate to real-world benefits, and the drug has known side effects like nausea and vomiting.
