Portable ultrasound could replace CT scans for shoulder assessment

NCT ID NCT04449146

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a portable ultrasound system to measure the position of the shoulder blade (scapula) in patients with shoulder arthritis while they stand. The goal is to see if this non-radiation method can give results similar to CT scans taken when lying down. Thirty adults scheduled for shoulder replacement surgery will participate, and the researchers will compare the measurements from both positions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If accurate, this portable ultrasound method could replace CT scans for assessing shoulder joint positioning, reducing radiation exposure.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The device's accuracy is still being validated.
